R.I.P. Mr. Magic

Hip Hop lost another pioneer today as founder of 'Rap Attack' Mr. Magic passed away today from a heart attack.

'Rap Attack', which debuted on WBLS-FM (New York) in 1983 and featured Marly Marl and Tyrone 'Fly Ty' Williams, was responsible for giving many hip hop legends their first radio airplay and lending mainstream credibility to Hip-Hop music in its early years.

The fact is, there would be no Hip Hop Project radio show if it wasn't for Mr. Magic and people like him. We are truly in debt to him and his contributions. Every show we have ever done has been in many ways a tribute to him, so we will continue the mission of playing quality hip hop music on the radio and spreading the message to as many people as possible.

R.I.P. Mr. Magic

Dj Premier said this earlier today:

"True hip hop heads know that his history is so long due to him being the first rap mixshow to ever be on commercial radio on New York’s WBLS (107.5) with Marley Marl and Fly Ty in 1982-1984. Then went on to to WHBI in October 1984 and then back to WBLS in 1985 and WDAS in Philly. Simultaneously he paved the way for all radio stations that ever did mixshows and also sparked the career of Boogie Down Productions due to the ids he showed when they came to shop their demo to him and was turned away which then sparked “South Bronx” and “The Bridge Is Over”. He was known for his direct and sarcastic attitude on the air and every artist wanted his approval when it came to breaking new records. He even had songs dedicated to him by the legendary Whodini (”Mr. Magic’s Wand”) which was surprisingly produced by one of my favorite artists, Thomas Dolby.

R.I.P. Grandmaster Roc Raida (1972-2009)

Hip Hop lost a legend earlier today as legendary Dj Roc Raida passed away. Details of his death have yet to be confirmed but reports say it was due to complications of a spinal injury.

Roc Raida was one of the founding members of the world famous X-Ecutioners (formerly X-Men/Ill Insanity) DJ Crew. Roc Raida won numerous awards in the field of turntablism including 1995 DMC World Championship.

We will be paying tribute to him tonight on the radio show, and if you're in NYC on October 22nd, there will be a benefit concert at BB Kings for his family.

The Hip Hop Project has now officially put its stamp all over the map. In 2006, The Hip Hop Project released "Street Triumph" with Freddie Foxxx and Dj Premier (NYC) followed up by "Resume" with Stricklin (Milwaukee). Shortly after in 2007, those releases were followed up by "Stormwatch" with Evidence of Dilated Peoples (L.A.). Now in 2009, The Hip Hop Project has brought it's Chicago to Atlanta to bring you "Fresh out the Box: The Best of Bobby Creekwater". For the past four years, Bobby Creekwater has solidified his bid to become the new "King of the South" with the release of several mixtape projects and his EP series entitled "The B.C. Era". Bobby Creek is one of the few artists of our generation to provide the perfect balance of street antems with conscious reminders of real life situations. The 'Fresh out the Box" mixtape provides the rare opportunty to showcase the best of what Bobby Creekwater has to offer so far. The project is mixed by The Hip Hop Project's own Dj Monky and Cosm Roks. The mix features cameos and production from Eminem, Obie Trice, Alchemist, Stat Quo, Ca$his, and many more. Even though this is "The Best of Bobby Creekwater", the best is really yet to come. Bobby Creekwater plans to release his first major studio album this fall. The mix will be available for free download for a limited time beginning NOW with a hard copy release to follow later this summer.
